A letter from the editor:

For the Conversations That Matter

As a little girl, I was fastidious about following “the rules.” I followed the rules because I didn’t want to die and go to hell (to put it bluntly).

I can’t pinpoint exactly where this mentality came from. It could’ve been my mom saying, “Jesus is watching you,” every time she left me and my siblings home alone. Maybe it was the older white man who told me, among several other kids, that if we didn’t accept Christ we would burn in hell when I was 8 years old. I’m not sure.

But whatever it was rooted and intertwined into every thought.

Don’t question God or you’ll go to hell.
